I love documentaries. Basically, if it's a documentary, and I can see it for free on netflix online, I will watch it. I won't even ask to be financially compensated for my time. I'm that giving.
Today I finally got around to seeing The Eyes of Tammy Fae, narrated by RuPaul!
Yeaaaaaahhhhh... so, the biggest takeaway I got from this one was that Jerry Fallwell is the spawn of Satan. He's basically the worst person on the face of the earth.
I expected to be really irritated by Tammy Faye, but I actually ended up really liking her. I didn't realize that she is so gay-friendly, which I really like. She also seems really sincere, which is bizarre since she seems like such a caricature. But I really think that if she is insane, she's sincerely insane.
Overall, though, I feel like this doc just reinforced my disgust with televangelism in general. Jim Baker goes on and on about how HARD and STRESSFUL it is to need to raise a million dollars every 2 days to keep his network and gigantic gluttonous empire going. But... why does he need to keep this network going? Like, its really just stress for the sake of self-perpetuation in my opinion. They don't seem to really care about helping people, or doing something positive for humanity as much as they care about being seen by people and being important. Tammy seems more concerned with what she's getting than with what she's giving.
She and others in this doc mention how she's the kind of person who makes lemonade when life gives her lemon. But... really... her lemonade is what? Putting another show on the air to beg money from people? How is that making something good for anyone but herself?
So, on one hand, Tammy seems to really embrace the good parts of religion, but on the other, she seems like a fundamentally self-absorbed person.
But I would watch the CRAP out of the Jim J. Bullock/Tammy Faye talk show if it was still on the air. Possibly the best idea for a show ever.
Oh wow, it's been awhile since I have seen that but yeah, I remember thinking I too kinda liked Tammy Faye.
